Have you ever walked into a home and immediately felt comfortable? Like you want to pull up a chair, relax, and spend the day? There is an almost tangible difference between a cozy home and an awkward space.
Making a space where your family and guests can relax doesn’t just happen, it is created with a few key elements essential to making a cozy space.
Evaluate the seating options in your main living areas (i.e. kitchen and family room), there should seating enough for your family and guests. Seating should be comfortable, and inviting so you have somewhere to unwind at the end of the day that is relaxing. If you only have room for two or three seating areas, make sure you choose wisely to select versatile pieces that fit in the space.

Rather than walking down the aisles of Hobby Lobby and picking up the latest trends, choose accents and home décor that is meaningful. Family heirlooms, antique books, or small momentos make the best home accents. They are great conversation starters, and unique décor but they also help to identify your space as yours, and bring back warm memories.

Overhead lighting is often harsh and uninviting. Lamps, unique light fixtures, chandeliers, and other lighting options bring warmth to the space. I love the soft light of a lamp, or the twinkling of string lights that bring charm and warmth. Lighting can really change the dynamic of the room and bring the space together. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, use it! The soft flicker of a flame is one of the coziest feelings in the world. If you don’t have a fireplace, you can still create a warm glow by using candles.

PILLOWS AND BLANKETS
Throw pillows, blankets, and cozy furnishings help to make you and your guests feel like you can unwind, relax, and stay a while. Drape a blanket over the couch, add a pillow to the arm chair, and encourage your family and guests to be comfortable.

Nothing says home like family pictures. When guests come in and see family pictures on the wall, it gives them a sense of who you are and what is most important. No need to overwhelm the walls with every school picture you ever took, but choose a few of your favorites and create a beautiful display that showcases your family.
My thumbs are far from green, but I love houseplants. Bringing natural elements indoors warms up a space and gives it an instant boost. Because I don’t have any hope of keeping a houseplant alive, I like to pickup a small bouquet of flowers when I’m out and about to breath new life into the space. Bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and living areas can all benefit from a boost of green.
