I often get asked what the design difference is between a cottage and a house. Well, the truth is, not much. A cottage is simply a smaller, cozy version of a “normal” size house. Generally, cottages are in beautiful locations that make up for the lack of house space. A cottage home may be small, but they are usually located on farmland, prairies, beaches, or mountain areas that are to die for.
However, even you don’t live in a quaint cottage in the French alps, you can use cottage elements to make the most of your small space.
The cottage exterior looks much like a farmhouse exterior, but on a smaller scale. Because it’s smaller, the bright white is a great way to make it stand out a little bit more. The dark trim accents look absolutely perfect, can’t wait to take a peek inside!

This entry area may be small, but it packs a lot of style in just a few square feet of space. It still gives you and your guests somewhere to sit down and put on (or take off) their shoes, a place to hang your hat or coat, and still has hidden storage in the bottom and a place for a few décor elements on top. The cottage living space is beautiful and full of natural lights. Because the space is small, they used only sheer curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. I also love the cool blue paint color which is interesting without being overbearing for the space. Small elements on the tables and mantles bring the space together without too much décor that would be overwhelming to the space.

Because the cottage kitchn is small, you can go bold with colored cabinets. I love the farmhouse sink as well as the butcher block counter space next to the stove for easy food prep.

Bedroom and Bathroom
The bedroom and bathroom are absolutely stunning in this cottage home, and the owner really made use of all the possible space. The bathroom is small, but still has everything you need and that beautiful claw foot tub is to die for. The diagonal bed in the bedroom makes the space appear larger and the beautiful paint color reminds me of a day at the spa.

Of course, outdoor entertaining in a cottage home is a must. For one, your kitchen and living areas might not be large enough to host all your guests and second, if you live in a picturesque location, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of that by enjoying your outdoor space.
