When I was pregnant, the first thing I started thinking about was the nursery. As soon as the nursery was done, I started thinking about how I would change it for the big boy room, and the cycle goes on and on. It’s a sickness really, but I love updating my kids rooms. I think it comes from the sense of always wanting to give them the best of the best and a little space in the world they can call their own.

I also always want my kids rooms to be functional. It needs to have enough storage to put everything away without adding clutter. It also needs to provide them a place for playing, focusing, reading, relaxing, and sleeping while incorporating some of their favorite elements. Here’s a few of my unique boy room themes I’ve been swooning over lately.

These two photos of a classic boy room.  They are basic, versatile and work with almost any age.

I love this idea of an outdoor bedroom complete with their own tent for lil’ campers.dont-use-boys-2Photo courtesy of apartmenttherapy.com

I have to admit I don’t love character bedrooms. But when I first saw this set from Pottery Barn, I thought it was so beautiful, I didn’t even realize it was Star Wars. Amazon sells a similar bedding pattern in gray here: Star Wars Reversible Comforter Setboys-3

Another drool-worthy room from Pottery Barn that is probably quadruple my normal bedroom budget, but gives some great DIY ideas for an adorable pirate room.   Here is a link to Nautical Pirate Quilted bedding found at a much lower price on amazon. boys-4

I love this take on a super hero room for the little brother of the family. It even has a place for him to hang his cape at the end of a long day.boys-5Photo courtesy of suburbanturmoil.com

For a little bit older teen or tween, this industrial-style  boy room is awesome with elements of wood, metal, and a more muted color pallet. boys-6Photo Courtesy of chiconshoestringdecorating.com

What little boy wouldn’t love a room with a tree fort, slide, and wooden ladder all covered in camo print? I think my husband might want to redo the master bedroom after he sees this idea.  For the complete look check out this Camo Comforter Set on Amazon. dont-use-boys-7

I think most boys love sports, but most mom’s couldn’t come up with this amazing sports room. I love how it’s not your traditional colors, and the sports elements are definitely included, but not overpowering to the space.

If your son is a budding musician, bring those elements into the room. If they insist on band posters on the walls, you can frame them nicely and add a few elements to make it their own personal muse.dont-use-boys-9

This is a completely cool skater room complete with a graffiti light fixture, road cone on the nightstand and an awesome wooden bed and wardrobe combination.  The vinyl skate boarder can be found here here, and here for roughly $5 each. boys-10
